These are the photographs I shot at the G20 protests in Toronto on Saturday, June 26 2010. I started at the main rally in Queen's Park, then as the rally split with some headed back towards Queen's Park and others headed south, I went south (the photos of people dancing and sitting infront of police in riot gear are from then). I then headed back up to Queen Street where I saw maybe 8 people, tops, smashing two police cars that had been left in the middle of the road, with hundreds of journalists, bystanders, and protesters looking on. Here, there was not a single police officer in sight. After I decided I no longer wanted to be an audience for those vandalizing police cars, I headed down Queen St and up Younge to Bloor to survey the damage. In all this time, I did not see a single police officer. The police abandoned the area and left it to be vandalized. An hour went by, at least, and I did not see a single officer.
I then went with some other protesters I'd just met to have dinner (the sense of community among (most) protesters on Saturday was insipring), then after dark later joined hundreds of protesters headed south down Younge to the fence. Shortly after the protesters arrived at the fence, the police standing in front of it left. They and probably a hundred more blocked protesters in from behind (we were between the fence and a building so it was easy to do so). I saw that this might be their tactic and started to move, so fortunately my friend and I just barely managed to outrun the police. At that point, we called it a day (both having flights to catch the next day for academic and work programs), and went home. Well, after we were let out of an area that became surrounded by police as we headed for the Greyhound station.
The police brutality that has taken place over the last few days is astounding and is entirely unacceptable. My heart goes out in solidarity to my fellow protesters.
